Acer Iconia A500
This nice little unit appeared in a store near me today. I spent half an hour playing with it only to have my wife veto the impulse buy Angry It's a very nicely put together piece of hardware, the brushed aluminium feels and looks very nice. The screen looks good too though its a magnet for fingerprints. However Acer's little software additions seem to be a complete waste of time.

The fact it has a full sized usb port puts it a full measure above the other Honeycomb tablets hitting the aussie market over he next few weeks. e.g. Xoom, Transformer and the Galaxy tab 10.1...

If the bank is kind to me i'll be getting one tomorrow.

RE: Acer Iconia A500
Bought one yesterday from the good guys for $640 for the 32Gb wifi version.

What a brilliant bit of kit.

Now I just need to get one of those jazzy cases that folds into a stand.

RE: Acer Iconia A500
I tried the one we had on display at work and I like it.
Almost bought one on the spot. But I've decided to wait for the others to be released (eg Asus Transformer) before I jump in and buy a tablet. I've wanted one for a while, but I can wait.

For me the Zoom would probably be okay but I will never buy another Samsung device unless it is really cheap.

RE: Acer Iconia A500
Had a play with the Acer A500 today at JBHIFI at Strathpine. I like it. It's a bit hefty though. the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is certainly going to be lighter.
The Acer unit is very fast and quite nice indeed. I like that it hasn't been skinned at all (except for Acer's own Hubs).

I am worried at the battery drain on the "Cell Standby" when it has no 3g modem and the Locked Boot loaders. There has been a few posts on XDA forums about the cell standby and it seems to be an issue on the Xoom (Wi-fi only) as well. so it's more of an Android fault than a Acer fault. I'm sure the Locked Boot Loaders will be rectified soon enough too. For someone like me who has customized the hell out of my Galaxy S, Mod-ability is one ting I am looking for. rooting the A500 is a simple task, modding it though... those pesky boot loaders stand in the way.

I was very surprised at the build quality and how well the device functioned. I am a fan of the full sized USB port. Smile That's handy! Now all they need is NTFS support and we'll be rocking! Although, I can survive with FAT32 for the moment. I don't have too many movies that are over 4gb in size. Big Grin

The only other thing that worries me about this device is the 1080p playback. Or it's lack there of. Apparently there is an update coming to rectify this issue though. So that's a plus. Speaking of updates too, Acer has confirmed that the A500 will be getting the Honeycomb 3.1 update in June via OTA. so again, a big plus there for Acer!

I'm going to wait until I get my hands on the Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1 before I make my final decision. But I can safely say it's between these three devices.

Phone: SGS
ROM: Ryyuu's EDB v1.3
Kernel: Dark Core
Modem: XXJVQ

I got to try a Galaxy Tab 10.1v a while back. I liked it too, but Honeycomb was not running smoothly on it. The Iconia A500 is definitely heavier and felt more solid.

Now if I can find a Xoom to try as well.
