which custom roms can i flash to?
hello, i've been looking around the web for information about flashing the Galaxy S, and i've ended up here!
there seems to be a lot of custom ROMs for the Galaxy S, and i have no idea which versions work and which ones will brick my phone. i was wondering how the naming of different firmware works. my baseband version is i9000HVJP3 and my sig has the rest of my firmware versions. can i flash to any gingerbread rom, or is there a specific rom i can only flash to? do i have to unlock my phone from Vodafone to be able to flash to any Gingerbread rom? i keep seeing i9000XXxxx (xxx being the different versions). what does the XX mean? i'm currently on i9000HVJP3, so will i be able to flash to the newest Gingerbread 2.3.4 i9000XXJVP? i've just rooted my GS and am looking for the best ways to make my phone a bit faster. thanks for any suggestions! i'd be greatly appreciated for any help. if there are already threads answering this question, i'll certainly take a look at them. =) i9000 Ficeto JVH PDA: i9000XWJVH Phone: i9000XXJVO CSC: i9000XEEJV3 |

RE: which custom roms can i flash to?
Personally after some searching I'd have to point you in two directions.
Perhaps the best known mod out there is Cyanogenmod - http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ But for my money - and the way I went - Darky's Mod - http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php Back when I rooted my phone cyanogen wasn't officially supporting the galaxy s for the latest version - it does now. Darky's on the other hand is a rom specifically designed for the galaxy s. Beyond that I can't really say - I've yet to do any further romming of my phone as I'm quite happy with Darky's - current version v10 give you Gingerbread - Android 2.3.3 ![]() Miui Scotland - Weekly V4 |

RE: which custom roms can i flash to?
thanks for the reply man =)
i was looking at this in particular, and was planning to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...?t=1102881 it shows you how to flash the firmware onto the phone, but i just don't know which one to pick. do all the ones under "Gingerbread 2.3.3" and the Europe "Gingerbread 2.3.4" work? i'm just unclear as to know which firmwares i can flash to. after your GS is rooted, does automatically mean i can flash to whatever i want? that's all i'm confused about. i'll check out Darky's Mod for sure i9000 Ficeto JVH PDA: i9000XWJVH Phone: i9000XXJVO CSC: i9000XEEJV3 |

RE: which custom roms can i flash to?
okay, this can be quite a broad subject...
Basically when coming from Froyo you need to be on Gingerbread bootloaders. If you are not, you will have issues. My advice to you would be to flash Darkyy's JVP base via ODIN first and then you can flash whatever JVP gingerbread rom you like. :-) I have just created my own custom rom which a lot of people seem to like so why not give that one a try? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...?t=1133395 Phone: SGS ROM: Ryyuu's EDB v1.3 Kernel: Dark Core Modem: XXJVQ |

RE: which custom roms can i flash to?
I'd still recommend something like Darky's as a first step - the tutorials there hold your hand from beginning to end of the rooting/updating process.
Once rich70's done that a couple of times then look at what else is out there - like your mod. This is where I find myself now - rooted from Froyo to Darky's 9.5 then updated to Darky's 10. 9.5 was as smooth as silk but I ran into some issues when doing the 10 update but I was better able to deal with them by that point. My next update will be a try of william's mod - possibly this weekend if I'm not running around too frantically doing rent inspection cleaning.

RE: which custom roms can i flash to?
whoa, thanks for the reply guys! =). i'm really lagging bad on Froyo 2.2. i think there's something wrong with the keyboards. when i use Swype, going into messages loads OK. but using the Samsung keyboard makes the messages take a lot longer to load. as well as other random lag moments every now and then.
i went on the Darky website the other day, and browsed through some of the stable releases. the first one i clicked on was the v10.1 release, but it says i must flash to Ficeto_JVH_Odin first. is this correct? (because i am currently on 2.2). after flashing this, i flash to v10.1 and i'm all good? i'm refering to this guide: http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index....ndly.3080/

RE: which custom roms can i flash to?
The package comes in 2 parts. The first is the underlying software code which is the Ficeto bit - he's an awesome coder who's work is used by a number of the rom creators. This is the more dangerous part of the update as I believe that this is when you can 'brick' your phone. FTR - the general opinion is that the Galaxy S is far harder to brick than most android phones.
You'll generally use the program Odin to apply this part of the update - it's all explained in the tutorials. Then you apply Darky's rom, or william's Ryyuu's EDB. This is the software package and tweaks. The software package is a mixture of the basic google software, various apps from the market and sometimes also programs lifted from other phones. A number of packages for the Galaxy S are using programs lifted from the Galaxy S II. ![]() Miui Scotland - Weekly V4 |
