Update Nexus One to Android 2.2

Okay, I may have missed a thread elsewhere. New to this forum.

So, got Nexus One on Vodafone. How do I upgrade to 2.2? Do I need to root the phone to do this? I got copies of the OS, renamed to update.zip, did all the things yet I get a signature verification failure. What do?

Can anyone point me to a link on a step by step guide on how to do it?

Officially you'll have to wait for Vodafone to send out the OTA (Over the air) Android 2.2 update.

Unofficially you can unlock your Nexus One's bootloader and flash a custom ROM like Cyanogen 6

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to read up on how to do that. No doubt I can kiss my warranty goodbye, though.

You can just flash back to the stock firmware and they would be none the wiser.

They will notice, as soon as you unlock the bootloader, the unlock image comes up when you boot.

Yeah, but I meant when you flash it back to stock firmware that should go...right?

Nope, once it's unlocked, it's unlocked. No going back

hmmm...that's different.
Though that isn't the case with all of the phones.

That lock image stays at the bottom of the screen when booting once you've unlocked the bootloader
