Custom Recovery Image for Galaxy S?
It seems that Clockworkmod (the creator of the very successful Clockwork Recovery Image) is hard at work in getting a custom recovery image onto the Galaxy S.

This tweet was taken from his twitter account twitter.com/clockworkmod

"Just got a rough recovery loaded onto the Samsung Galaxy S. Gonna need to tweak it to work on this phone. It's pretty different."

This is fantastic news for Galaxy S owners!
The custom recovery allows you to do all sorts of lovely things such as installing ROM update zips, wiping various parts of the device, backing up and restoring using NANDROID backups and much more.

I'll keep you posted on this when I know more!

Phone: SGS
ROM: Ryyuu's EDB v1.3
Kernel: Dark Core
Modem: XXJVQ

He also confirmed this morning via twitter that the recovery will work for ALL models of the Galaxy S. Seems to be picking up pace, can't wait until this is released, will make it so much easier to test and switch between roms

RE: Custom Recovery Image for Galaxy S?
I saw that this morning too.

He has also said that it is completely working except for the boot img backup. Once he has that ironed out we'll have a custom recovery image!

"Anyone know how to back up the kernel on a Samsung Galaxy (or Galaxy S)? Everything in recovery works except for boot image backup."

RE: Custom Recovery Image for Galaxy S?
It seems that we are very VERY close to a recovery image for the SGS...

"Nandroid Restore is now working on Galaxy S. Time for sleep. Limited beta testing tomorrow, and a release tomorrow night or the day after." - 22 hours ago

"Restore is now working on the Galaxy S. I need to hunt down the random reboot on initial power on, and random wipe. Then I can release." - 7 hours ago

"I seem to have fixed the reboot/wipe problems... Here is the test kernel for Odin Galaxy S. Only the brave need apply. http://bit.ly/czDrPC"

I wasn't brave enough!
Hopefully a stable beta hits some time over the weekend, just in time to test JM1 or MCRr3!

RE: Custom Recovery Image for Galaxy S?
Clockworkmod Recovery is on the market with Galaxy support!!
For anyone nervous about flashing custom or leaked beta roms, it means you can do a full system backup of your Optus rom, and safely restore back to it if required.

Search for clockworkmod in the market. Install the custom recovery, select backup. It will boot into the stock recovery. Use volume keys to select 'update.zip' which will proceed to backup your system.

With JM2 and a working system backup utility I am LOVING this phone!!

Some Install Instructions

Installation instructions:

1. Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2. Flash Recovery.
3. Choose Galaxy S i9000 as your phone.
4. Accept the Superuser prompt.
5. Use ROM Manager to create a Backup.
6. On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
7. Watch the backup go!
