Buying a tablet
I'm looking to get a tablet - most likely next year but for the sake of argument let's say this year.

Simple question - what should I get?

What it needs to do-
Wifi
eReader
Play video

That's it - yes I'll play games and other stuff but that above is what it needs to do. I don't plan on putting a sim card in it so I'm not looking at plans.

RE: Buying a tablet
i would say next year will be a really good time. the quad core tabs will start coming out so i would think the price of the tegra 2 tablets would drop and you can pick one up at a good price. Also the the amazon tablet is meant to be coming soon at a good price (200-300) which will be interesting to see.

but if you dont want to watch HD video you could even get a galaxy tab (the first gen) its fast and would do everything quite nice.
and there is always the hp touchPad.

as its stands atm if i was going to get a new tablet i think i would go touchpad. just for the price and i dont use many apps mostly just the browser then maybe Transformer. As much as i love my Gtab and it only being $240 for a tegra 2 tablet i hate Viewsonic for not supporting it.

Samsung Galaxy S: CM9
Viewsonic G tablet: Gtabcomb 3.2beta
iPad 2

Re: Buying a tablet
I'd hang off until the Apple vs Samsung game is finished. Then see what announcements are made.
10.1 is coming
Xoom 2 is rumoured
HTC have several models on their way.

The competition will be tighter than it is now and the winner hopefully... will be the consumer!

Re: Buying a tablet
Amazon half-tab.
I say half because its android as much as all the other Ripley's were Ripley in alien.

Regardless, would be interesting to see how that develops.
Might function amazingly well for its purposes.

RE: Buying a tablet
The different sites seem to be quite keen on how this new Amazon tab is going to perform.

RE: Buying a tablet
Let me first say that I am technology savvy but not in the league of many on these forums. I am however, a heavy user of technology and have often been an early adopter. So for what its worth I offer these comments:-
- in terms of Book reading you should look at where you read books, if you do any reading outdoors in sunlight then you will not be happy reading on a tablet, you will be far better off with an E-ink device for this purpose, even if you don't read outdoors you should consider it for the benefits of long battery life and low weight and now for around $100 you have a choice, my wife has a Kindle 3, a and I have a Nook touch, both are great. Having said that it is also easy to load up your books on tablet as well using the app that emulates your E-ink reader so you can always carry on reading on whatever device is handy - plus your phone too.
- Most tablets have WiFi but in my opinion you should also consider having 3G or whatever is available in your area since once you have the tablet you will want to take it wherever you go and depending on your locations WiFi may not always be an option.
- what to get will depend on what deals are around at the time you buy. Looks like ICS will be standard by the time you are considering so I would look at the price and support. I find a device will last me 18-24 months before it's out of date or I'm feeling left behind so price factors in for me. I just got Acer Iconia A501 for A$339, probably end of it's life soon but it will do me well for 18 months or so.

Hope those thoughts assist your decision.

RE: Buying a tablet
If the Iconia Tab A500 was still at its $600+ price, I'd have said don't touch it. I've got one, and it's a heavy mothertrucker without that much to get excited about.

Now that it's at $250 (or whatever) at The Good Guys, it's a pretty attractive option. Its specs are still very current, after all.

RE: Buying a tablet
I'm thinking that the tablet is on hold for 6 months or so. Sad
Just too poor.

As to where I read - just about everywhere when I am reading - which I'm not doing much right now - work - train - bus - home.

Thanks for the thoughts chaps
