Cm7 and H vs 3G

Just went cm7 on my nexus s.
One thing I've noticed immediately is the appearance of H instead of 3G in some instances.
Reliability hasn't changed because it was already great.

From what I'm reading the H means I'm getting hsdpa vs just 3G, theoretical speed increase. Unfortunately this is an unforeseen advantage, so I haven't been able to make before and afters of speeds.

Is this just cm7 or am I really getting a stronger connection?

If your modem has changed this may be possible - the modem software is part of the software install.
Beyond that no - your hardware is unchaged and I don't think anything other than changed modem software may affect your reception.
