unlock samsung mini?? <on australian network>

i have samsung galaxy mini but its sim-locked to an australian network (optus) how can i unlock it? is it possible to unlock without rooting the cell? also i cant request the network for unlock code since it was a gift and i am not in australia (currently in pakistan and want to use it on a pakistani cellular network)

please if any one can suggest a way to unlock the phone..considering i am new to android and have absolutely no knowledge of rooting etc

I wouldn't suggest rooting your phone, as it is a network issue rather than an Operating system issue, so rooting wouldn't be helpful in this case..

I have found the following information from the Optus website

How Can I Remove Network Locking?

The Account Holder or Account Level Pin Holder can arrange to have your Optus Pre-Paid Mobile Network Locking removed by calling Optus Customer Service on 1300 555 002. Once Optus obtains your unlock code you will be instructed how to remove the Network Locking feature on your phone. This will include instructions to dial a sequence of numbers (your specific removal code number). Not all handsets are eligible for unlocking. Eligibility can be confirmed by calling Customer Service.
How Much Does This Cost?

If you choose to have Network Locking removed within six months of activation or upgrading, there will be an $80 fee ($120 for BlackBerry or Apple iPhone) charged. Alternatively, if you have recharged up to the value of $80 ($120 for BlackBerry or Apple iPhone) or have been connected for longer than six months, no fee will be charged.

Basically, you either pay $80 to have your phone unlocked, or just recharge up to the amount of $80.. Depends if you can be bothered using $80 worth of credit.

If it was a gift, the sim card in the phone still would have been activated in your name.

You should contact Optus and ask them for unlock code, either format your phone to fill in the lock code again.

You can unlock it using unlock code which can be requested either from your network provider or you can use any third party, which provides this service. But Samsung mobile phones have a problem of double lock. If your mobile is double locked, then it can only be unlocked using cable method
