I have an imported HTC Desire (not the Telstra one). It recently automatically updated to FroYo (2.2) without issue.

I've been having issues getting HTC Sync to consistently work (even before the FroYo update).

I'm using a Windows 7 computer and have HTC Sync 2.0.33.
I'm using the stock HTC cable and haven't made any stupid mistakes (trust me!)

Firstly: I do not want to synchronise my calendar with Google or anywhere else in "the cloud". For security/privacy I want to synchronise it only with my Exchange calendar in Outlook directly with a Cable. HTC Sync provides this functionality and (when it works) it is reasonably good.

The problem is that HTC Sync does not reliably connect when my phone is plugged in to my PC.

My phone's default connection type is "HTC Sync" so as soon as I plug it in to my PC it begins to look for the HTC Sync program on my PC. 99% of the time it doesn't find it, even though it is running.

An error is displayed on the Desire:
"Next Step
Unable to find HTC Sync on your PC. Please make sure that HTC Sync is installed and opened on your computer..."

Now, I've found that if I manually switch the connection type over to something else (like Charge only) and then back it works 50% of the time.

Even then, when I go to do a sync sometimes the software on the Desire itself will stop before the sync is finished from the PC side!
I can't remember the exact error, but it involves the sync failing because a process stops on the phone before the sync is complete.

Anyway, I first thought that these problems might be to do with a Task Killer application I was running on the Desire. However it is not set to automatically kill tasks and the problem occurs even after a fresh reboot of my Desire.

It's getting really frustrating...I need to sync my Calendar on a regular basis. Sad

Has anybody else had these frustrations please?
Do you have any suggestions please?

Thanks!

I had similar problems and worked out that HTC drivers are not very compatible with win 7. I installed HTC sync on a win xp computer and it has not missed a beat since. another issue is that under win7, HTC sync needs to be run in elevated mode. hope this helps. all the best.

RE: HTC Sync is buggy/unreliable
I have same phone, imported from the middle east (I think) Only languages are english barhrain, english quatar etc......
I downloaded htc sync from the sd card and it took about 5 or 6 connects to get the computer to recognise the phone. I still get the
Unable to find HTC Sync on your PC. Please make sure that HTC Sync is installed and opened on your computer..." But when I tap OK it syncs all I ask it too.
I also get the multiple calendar entries plus sometimes 10 - 30 birthday reminders.....but with the WRONG dates. My brother's birthday is 1 Jan, but my phone keeps telling me (10 - 30 times) his birthday is some other date in the year.
it also continually asks me to link addresses even though I dismiss all these links.
There seems to be many bugs in the syncing program, hopefully someone will sort it out in a new release. Oh look a flying pig Angel

RE: HTC Sync is buggy/unreliable
I have latest HTC Sync working ok on two PCs, an XP (SP3) machine and a Win 7 (SP1) machine. I had a lot of trouble with the Win 7 machine at first and called HTC. They told me to do a "Soft" reset of the phone, which to them meant shutting down the phone and turning it off, remove the battery and leave it out for 10 mins. Reinstall the battery and startup the phone again and try Sync again with the phone set to Debugging turned ON. Worked like a charm. (except I'd call it a "hard" reset, personally!).
YMMV
