Getting Your SGS into Downlaod and Recovery mode
have seen people saying they are having problems getting their phone into recovery (vol up+home+power) and download mode (vol down+home+power), i got an early one and it works fine but my g/f got one with new firmware and it seems like you cant get in to work, thinking i will call optus today or tomorrow and see if they can replace with one that works or if they are all going to be like this, ive also read that there is a way that works.
i have not tested and this may cause harm to your device. try at own risk.

1. Turn off
2. Battery out
3. (with USB cable connected to computer) Vol up/down + Power pressed together..until you see the Samsung I9000 sign
4. After you see the sign, press the Home button

RE: Getting Your SGS into Downlaod and Recovery mode
I just tried this out again to be sure.
It works no problem for me. I do it with the battery in and no USB connection, so copy any file across first.
Check to see if you have USB debugging on, and make sure you cross your eyes when holding down the buttons Wink

very interested to know what they will tell u.
am on a mac too..
but unfortunately to update ur phone u MUST have Kies or Odin (unofficial) and unfortunately both are only avail for windows.
is very sad that mac users are being left out..cmon we are not in the 90s! we are freaking 2010!...
Also with the popularity of the Galaxy S ...am sure lots of ppl are in the same boat..ie they have a mac and not windows...
and am sure even if u can use bootcamp to load windows..doubt it ppl will purchase windows 7 just to upgrade the phone.

DTJG4 appears to be what mine is running, and no I still haven't been able to get in to download or recovery mode using any of these methods so far.

RE: Getting Your SGS into Downlaod and Recovery mode
I bought my SGS early on and the 3 button download & recovery mode works fine.
A mate of mine bought one last weekend and it turns out the 3 button trick does not force it into download mode. I had read reports aroudn the net of new phones having the option removed, but just figured they weren't doing it right.

Anyway, we put the phone into download mode via ADB but had a bad flash in Odin. Because the 3 button mode didnt work the phone was effectively bricked! We had the 'phone!computer' screen, which is easily fixed on 3 button phones but nothing could be done here. My mate took it back to Optus and claimed DOA, hopefully he gets a replacement.

For anyone interested, there is a thread on XDA which is working on flashing the bootloader so that newer phones can still boot into download mode using 3 buttons. For people who cant boot to download using the 3 buttons, your chances of bricking when flashing via Odin are uncomfortably high
