Is this through the Gmail Application or the 'Mail' Application?

Mail -> *choose your account* -> *hit the menu button* -> More -> Settings -> Notification Settings ->
* Email notifications: on
* Notification sound: on
* Notification vibrate: on

RE: HTC desire email notification
If all else fails, you can always try a factory reset. If that doesn't work, contact the people you purchased it from.

used the gmail app today and notifications work fine in that app, seems to be a problem with the mail app.

RE: HTC desire email notification
Well, have you use the Gmail application or the mail application only for the email notification. Because I think it has some incompatible regarding in the application in your email and the some add ons you use. However, you can try to search in online by using some search engine like google and yahoo. I think you can be found some info that you can be use in your topic.
