S-Off for Desire
Hey, great news for Desire owners. There's a security function within the Desire software that stops you editing system files directly on the device and requires signed files from HTC, well a Dev at XDA has found a way to turn the security off. Basically it unlocks the phone as far as you can go at the moment. Giving access to all af the native NAND storage. It's not a simple process, to unlock, but I've managed it Smile

Proceed at your own risk, involves some rudimentary Linux knowledge, and a lot of trial and error

That bit about the "trial and error" has me worried... Might spend the w.end reading up on this and kiss bye-bye to the Hel$tra Splash for good.

RE: S-Off for Desire
So, I have just been reading heaps on the XDA link. Looks like most folks haven't had any drams...except the poor dude whose phone sat and did nothing for an hour until he flashed a different ROM...lol, dude must have balls of cast iron...I would be in tears!!

Point of post, though, do I need to do nandroid and system backups before flashing this and, aside from the obvious app or splash removal, what is this actually good for?

It was worth it just to get rid of the Telstra splash, but it unlocks the NAND, allows you to read/write system files directly on the phone, Unlocked just like a developer phone. Of course Nandroid and system backup, treat this process the same as if you were flashing a rom, or new radio. Don't take any chances. I see today that the .iso has been updated to to fix that hang at the end of the process that a lot of people reported. So it should be even easier.

Obviously the CD method seems to be the easiest, once it boots it gives you instructions. I Don't have a CD [EeePC] so I used VirtualBox, but it wouldn't work until I uninstalled HTCSync from the PC. It uses the drivers you installed when you rooted your phone in the second step, other than that it's pretty straight forward.
