I have not had the courage to do it myself, but there is the how to, and the author claims it is "Risk Free".... let us know how you go here!

RE: Desire Root
I've rooted mine using that guide, quick and easy. Just make sure you download the right root files.

Well I had the time to mess around with this method of unlocking it was dead simple, the thing that took the longest was downloading the files... i actually had to try it on another computer than my normal laptop, for some reason it wouldn't work on my normal computer, but i saw on a forum post that people said to try a different computer, so i did, and it worked!!

It was so freakin simple, and easy...

I thought I might be able to uninstall some of the Telstra crap once I rooted, but I wasn't. I was able to install an app which turns my phone into a wifi hotspot and a few other things...

Unrevoked was what I used as well, once you've rooted you can download an app called RomManager, that works with the recovery image unrevoked flashed to the phone, and it will easily let you flash custom roms. Only way to get rid of the crapware from the ugly T. I'm using this Rom at the Moment, just cause it's stock HTC Smile

HTC HD2 running Custom Froyo
HTC Desire rooted, S-Off, AuraxTSense 7.8.1
Kernel uv/oc 2.6.32 for Sense Roms
Baseband:5.11.05.14
