Apparently not. A mate of mine got a telstra one that won't access his VF card...

that's odd. mine worked with my wife's vf prepaid simm. that's the first thing i tried after getting the phone home

i didn't try all the functions except that it boots up alright and did ring when i rang it.

the phone boots up with a telstra next g screen though, and has bigpond icon in the app page !!!??? so what's the story? unlocked, but with telstra's own firmware?

i got the phone on the $49 cap plan 24 months contract with mro. as far as i know telstra's contract phones were always unlocked. so i'll be very surprised if it's locked.....

No the bigpond icon is a shortcut to the webpage - there's a bunch of other shortcuts in there as well. It's standard firmware; the splash screen is customised.

I might go back and double check with my mate, he's not the most technical of people.

Bear in mind that if you run the VF SIM card you won't get reception in the country..

Ya i realised that. just that with the bigpond shortcut and the splash screen it seems to indicate a locked phone that's all. but now i understand that it's just a customised firmware but not locked.

btw why wouldn't vf sim getting reception in the country? is that because of the nextg or 3g thingy? i don't really understand these nextg and 3g stuff. can someone explain in noob's terms? ta

Basically because of the frequency which the cell towers talk to phone. The waves for Vodafone (and Optus and 3) run at 900Mhz, whereas NextG runs at 850Mhz (because telstra co-opted the old analog system, where the opposition built theres from scratch with "superior" technology).

So phones for the different carriers have different radios hardwired in to listen for the different signal frequency. You can get multi-band radios, but then the SIM card will only respond to the channel it is programmed to; the carriers channel.

In the cities you shouldn't have a problem...
